Carpet Care & Expectations
Walk off Mats – The use of entrance mats to absorb soil and moisture will greatly improve the performance of your flooring. Keep the mats clean so they don’t become a source of soil themselves. Also try to keep the sidewalks and entrance ways of your home clean to reduce the amount of soil tracked onto your new floor.
Quality Cushion – One of the biggest determinants of how your carpet will wear is the cushion you select as the foundation of your new floor. A quality cushion not only provides comfort underfoot, but it can substantially add to the life of your carpet.
Move Furniture – To help avoid pile crushing occasionally move or rearrange your heavy furniture.
Avoid Rolling Chairs – Do not use chairs or appliances with rollers on carpet installed with cushion, as this can cause damage to the carpet.
Protect from Fading – Use blinds, shades, or awnings to protect your carpet from prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. Pick a Sensible Colour – Keep in mind that dark colours show less soil than light colors, and that very dark colours show lint more than medium or light colours. Multicolour carpets are very effective at hiding equally.
Vacuuming – The most important step in caring for your carpet is vacuuming. Thorough and frequent vacuuming removes soil before it can work its way deep into your carpet requiring professional cleaning. Heavy traffic areas should be vacuumed twice per week, and light traffic areas once per week. For most carpets * an upright vacuum with a top loading bag, a beater brush and HEPA filter is recommended.
Professional Cleaning – It is important that you have your carpet professionally cleaned when you begin to notice a residue that vacuuming does not remove. There is recommended interval for this, some carpets will need it every six months, while others may need it every other year. Most manufacturers** recommend professional hot water extraction be used for periodic deep cleaning of their products. Research indicates that this method provides the best cleaning results. Please check with your retailer for cleaning to insure warranty.
*The beater brush can damage some carpets. A vacuum without a rotating brush on these carpets is recommended. Please check with retailer for recommended cleaning.
